Frequently Asked
Questions

Why are you organizing?

We are challenging Duke University’s complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide, apartheid, and occupation in Palestine and urging Duke to address these human rights abused through divestment from Israel. As we do this work, we recognize that the Palestinian liberation movement is intricately interconnected with a network of liberation movements worldwide.

Who can join the coalition?

Duke Divest Coalition is a group of groups. We invite organizations to read our mission, vision, values, and demands. You can join the movement by signing up as an organization. If you’re an individual interested in getting involved, consider joining one or more of the numerous organizations in our coalition. Can’t find your space or political home? Contact us and we can help.

What does Duke have to do with all this?

Universities across the U.S., including Duke University, have investments in companies that are indirectly and directly involved in Israel’s illegal apartheid and occupation of Palestine and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. In July 2023, the United Nations named almost 100 companies that are involved in Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories that are considered illegal under international law. Other human rights groups have published similar lists. While Duke provides little transparency on its investments, we know that it has invested in companies that are complicit in Israeli apartheid in the past. For example, in 2003 a previous iteration of the Duke Divest campaign found that Duke held stocks in companies like Caterpillar Inc., which provides the Israeli army with equipment to demolish Palestinian homes (including much of the Jenin refugee camp in 2002), build Israel’s apartheid wall, seize land, and uproot thousands of olive trees.
